Many people believe they cannot meet the first requirement of dreamwork—remembering their dreams. Some investigators, for example Freud, say that we forget our dreams because we don’t want to know what is in them. If true, this would be tough to overcome, and remembering our dreams would require professional assistance. However, this isn’t the only … Continue reading Remembering Your Dreamsread more
Here is a dream I had almost seven years ago, around the time Oprah’s last show was airing, that illustrates how we use repetition in our dreams. Again for me! Another Oprah dream! I was having plenty of Oprah Dreams!! That is what we called ROTE when I was back in school. Do you remember … Continue reading Repetition In Dreamsread more
Wondering what to do about something that’s bothering you? Life is filled with decisions– our own, others’, and even those others telling us what decisions to make. But the fact is, deep down inside, we usually know exactly what we should do. The trick is getting in there to access that wisdom.read more
Doug Llewelyn on CUTV Radio in New York City recently interviewed me. The interview is here, below for you.
Since we only had a half hour and wanting to be sure I’d get in everything, I pasted everything I wanted to cover, right across my desk!read more
A few weeks ago I wrote about a recurring image or theme that repeats itself during the same night. It’s called ROTE. I am going to discuss how some images and themes can repeat over a period of weeks, or months; sometimes even years!read more
From working with so many people, helping them understand their dreams, I am convinced the important part is that you connect to the dream’s meaning, no matter what method you use. Sometimes you can get some great info just from one picture or one scene in a dream!read more
Our home….every room….was filled with people. I don’t think I knew them but in the dream, they’re all friends….but friends who don’t leave!!! And the furniture is moved all over the place. In some cases there’s even more furniture than there was! For example, there’s three TV’s in the den. And there’s musical instruments everywhere along with musicians. It’s as though Andy doesn’t even notice all this going on!….Or anyway he isn’t bothered by it.read more
I’m with a boy and a woman. I am a child too. We’re on the moon. It’s full. All of us lying on our stomachs holding on. We are worried about falling off (down) but then I remember we’re weightless up here aren’t we? We should be able to let go and float.read more
The late Dr. Montague Ullmans’ approach, commonly referred to as the “If this were my dream” method is what I want to discuss in this article. Dr. Ullman, like all of us, was faced with a dilemma when working with a group of people doing dreamwork, a situation he found himself in constantly.read more
Like many people, you may havedreamed about people you love who have died, or about dying yourself. While these dreams can be sad or frightening, they don’t have to be. Dreams of death and visits from deceased loved ones are not necessarily about death in the literal sense. To find out what these dreams mean, you need to investigate how you have used the imagery of death in order to say something to yourself.read more
You have sex with your best friend. Or sex with a hot stranger, perhaps while lying in bed right next to your partner! How does this dream make you feel when you wake up? Aroused? Uncomfortable? Guilty? All of the above? It’s not surprising that of all the dream topics I analyze with clients, read more
The philosophy that respects all the parts of the dream beings parts of ourselves begs a discussion of how polarities appear in our dreams. In fact, establishing the polarities in a dream often leads to the ‘answer’ or strength therein.read more
Here’s another dream fragment (one image). This one is an example of a recurring image. After 39 years I am still as fascinated by how much information we can gather even from one sole image in a dream.read more
The father’s of psychology agreed that the dream gives us a safe place to practice; in essence a rehearsal for an event. No kidding. Okay… I know it’s metaphor if, for example, you find yourself committing a murder, that you are not actually rehearing killing someone. Alfred Adler said the dream gives rise to an emotion that helps you move forward towards the goal.read more
Well here I am again! Another Oprah dream! That in itself is a ROTE! Do you remember rote in school? Rote is a repeat. Read, write, recite. Read, write, recite. That’s how we learn. And the dreams give us rote as well. Your subconscious wants to make sure your conscious gets it. Rote happens during the same dream, or in dreams that span the night, and can happen over a period of days as well!read more
Even though a few people were blocking my view, I realized my Dad was standing there! I went up and said “Hi Daddy” so happy to see him. He put his arms up to me to dance and we danced together!! Just the same as he used to with my Mom. Totally in step!! And not for a second either. I actually had a whole dance with him. There were no words. There didn’t need to be. I was with my Dad that night. I know he is with us.read more
In 2002 just after my book came out, was near the time a connection was starting to happen through an alumni site of a camp I grew up at in Lake George, NY. I was suddenly finding and corresponding with people who I hadn’t seen in over 40 years. In a conversation with Susan, one of my old girlfriends I mentioned that I am a dream analyst. She had said she’s had a recurring dream she would love to understand and so I invited her to call me so that we could work through decoding its meaning.read more

Last week I watched a TV show called Where Do I Come From? It’s a new show Lisa Kudrow produces where TV and movie stars work through ancestry.com to discover their roots. I have been thinking about visiting ancestry.com but it wasn’t until this morning that I finally took a peek. I ran a find on my late father, Joseph Dalfen z’l. It wasn’t long before I found him. I didn’t find him under the name of Joseph though. he was listed as Jacob. I knew his name was actually Jacob Joseph. He preferred his middle name and in fact I didn’t even learn his first name was Jacob until I was 10 or 11 years old.read more

My husband Andy has been working with the same company now for 23 years. Six months after he started working there he mentioned to his boss one day that his sister was going to marry R Dalfen (who is my cousin). The boss thought that was cool. It meant that now my sister-in-law would also be our cousin and our cousin would now also be our brother-in-law. 2 Segals marrying 2 Dalfens! Even that is amusing.read more
Here’s a mini synchronicity. I watched the Donald Trump Roast on Comedy Central this week. Marlee Matlin was one of the roasters. She is deaf and so she had, sitting beside her, her “assistant” who was signing what everyone else was saying. I said to Andy (my husband), that the signer looks exactly like a comedian I know who, I said, happens to be one of my all time favorite comedians, Gilbert Gottfried.read more
I am a dream analyst. The other day, I was working with a client on the telephone, who was describing her dream filled with themes of black and white. My office is in my home and from my desk I have a view of the vestibule. While I was discussing her dream with my client, my daughter came into the house and walked past me into her bedroom. When she passed I noticed she was dressed all in black. A few minutes later as the dreamer was discussing the white images in her dream, I looked up and saw my daughter walk by me again except this time she had changed and was dressed all in white!read more
I was at a family Bar Mitzvah. A good friend of mine was there who I hadn’t seen in a while. We went to the washroom together where it would be quiet to catch up. It’s funny. After this whole discussion about recurring themes and images in these last few articles, (Rote, http://dreamcatcher.net/layne/5949 Recurring Dream Themes, http://dreamcatcher.net/layne/6100 Dream Fragments 2) I was so focused on why we’ll have these recurrences over a short period of time, that I forgot to discuss what it’s about when you have a recurring image that stretches over a long period of time!read more
Hi dreamers and even those of you who think you are non-dreamers!
I have tremendous faith in the power of dream work, for I have seen its positive effects on my own life and the lives of others.
I have found over the years that there is no single, “right” approach to understanding dreams.
…..Must be a new series. It’s the second hiding dream I’ve had in two weeks. I am walking on an boulevard. The street is wide. In the center there’s a row of very high palm trees. It’s not a movie being shot but it could be because high up atop one of the trees a young woman is sitting in a small basket. The tree is being pulled to one side and then another. I am amazed she is not falling. Now suddenly she’s walking with the tree like on stilts.read more
I went shopping to a bookstore just as it opened. It’s carpeted. Feels even like it could be in a school. I know one of the things I bought besides books, was a wall clock for Emma-Jo. I do think that one or two were ones I had bought before that I wanted to have nice copies of.read more
Flying from Montreal/Munich. Long flight. Took me a while to finally fall off to sleep. You have no idea how many times in the 39years I have heard dreamers describe how they arrive at the exam room in high school and have no pen, or forgot their material…can’t open their locker…can’t get to the classroom, etc. So funny how I have never had that common dream. Well Montreal/Munich on my way to Amsterdam was finally my turn to experience the experience I hear from so many clients.read more
I dreamed I was standing at a bus stop on Queen Mary Road. I had laid out a piece of cream colored carpet so a few women who were coming off the bus could see it and hopefully buy it. And it’s not even a carpet you’d put down on the floor (unless at the door) to wipe your feet. It’s just a cut of a carpet, and a lousy cut at that! It’s shaped like a messy, uneven triangle. I have price stickers on the back of it. The price was 39.99. The forst woman looks at it and offers me 40-something dollars. I am so happy I say to her, “I’m sure you’re the one who is going to get it.”read more
Two days ago I dreamed of a tsunami. I was walking on the beach with Emma-Jo. We went down a hill of sand to a place where there were windows. We are outside the building near the line of windows but walking nearer the windows than the ocean. Suddenly the waves are so high that they come all the way to the building and slap us up against the windows! I remember feeling plastered flat against the window. The wave moves back. We are okay yet still plastered….(No. I don’t drink. So stop thinking that was a play on words.) In the reflection of the window I see a massive wave building behind us. I am caught between taking a deep breath to prepare for it and calling out to Andy to help us!read more
It makes sense that I have always been so fascinated by dreams and their meaning. I have great dream recall and have been discussing them since I was a child, long before I knew we are problem solving in them.
I first learned we are problem solving in my early twenties, during therapy with a brilliant Freudian psychoanalyst.read more
Whether it’s your teeth repetitively falling out of your head or going on a homicidal rampage, waking up sweaty and disoriented from a bizarre dream can leave you wondering what the hell is wrong with your head. And it really doesn’t help when you have the same dream over and over. Concerned about whether or not our recurring nightmares meant we were awful people or simply unwell (probably both), we reached out to a professional dream analyst, Layne Dalfen, to find out.read more
